Custom Handmade Knives Built to Celebrate America's 250th Anniversary

Posted on July 4, 2026

Why We're Creating Our Bicentennial Collection of Custom Handmade Knives

People have been asking me lately why we're taking on such an ambitious project. The short answer is because some things deserve to be remembered the right way.

Our country turns 250 this year.

Now, I'll be honest with you. I still can't spell "bicentennial" without looking it up. Around the Woody Shop we've taken to calling it the "Bi-and-a-Half." It's easier that way. Sometimes, if we're feeling fancy, we'll call it The Great American Bi-and-a-Half.

Whatever you call it, I believe this anniversary deserves more than fireworks and a long weekend.

It deserves something made by hand.

Four Generations of Making Custom Handmade Knives

For over four generations, my family has been making custom handmade knives here in South Carolina. My great-grandfather Augustus started it. My dad carried it on. I've been fortunate enough to spend my life at the bench, and now my son Gus is doing the same. We've always believed that a good knife isn't just something you own. It's something you use, take care of, and someday hand to someone who comes after you.

That idea feels a lot like America to me.

Things worth having are built over time. They require work, sacrifice, and people willing to leave something better than they found it.

Handmade Knives Found Their Way to All Fifty States

When we launched woodybrandknives.com a few years ago, we honestly figured we'd sell a few knives to folks who appreciated handmade work. Before long, knives started heading to Texas, then Maine, then Alaska, then Hawaii. One customer told another, and before we knew it, there were Woody Brand knives finding homes in all fifty states.

We never set out to put a knife in every state.

We just set out to build good knives.

I guess you could say America collected us.

That realization means more to me than I can put into words. Every order, every conversation, and every customer who chose to carry one of our knives became part of our story. This collection is my way of saying thank you.

A Limited Collection of One-of-a-Kind Custom Handmade Knives

Over the rest of this year, the boys and I will be building a special series of commemorative knives inspired by the people, places, and stories that have shaped this country. Each one will be made individually in the Woody Shop. No two will be exactly alike. Every knife will have its own personality, just like the places and people that inspired it.

Some will tell stories from American history.

Some will honor places we've visited or dreamed about.

Some will simply capture a feeling that's hard to explain but easy to recognize.

The first knife in the collection is called the Bloody Run Boot Knife, and it's one of the most meaningful knives we've ever made. As the months go by, we'll introduce the others and share the stories behind each one.

Why We Believe Custom Handmade Knives Tell a Story

This project isn't about politics.

It isn't about nostalgia.

It's about gratitude.

I'm grateful to live in a country where a fellow can spend his days making knives by hand. I'm grateful for the generations who came before me. And I'm grateful for the customers from every one of the fifty states who have welcomed a little piece of our South Carolina shop into their homes.

As America celebrates 250 years, we wanted to mark the occasion the only way we know how.

By making a few more great knives.

I hope you'll enjoy following along as the collection unfolds.

And if one of these knives eventually finds its way into your hands, I hope you'll use it well, take good care of it, and maybe one day pass it along.

That's the American way.

That's the Woody way.
