We don't make a lot of our famous “BA” (Big #@! or Bad - either works just fine) ) Cleavers, primarily for economic reasons. The reality being, that we can make a half dozen typical Woody handmade Field knives in the same space of time we spend just making one of these big old cleavers.

Most the time they are done on a commission basis. It's very satisfying to start with a raw hunk of steel and see it slowly transform into a remarkable tool that will endure for generations. We made a couple back at Christmas and Woody decided it might be a good idea to make one a month, just to stay in practice, so here is the January Clever. 

 Yes, it’s quite a hand full with a highly tempered .0250’ gauge 1095 high carbon tool steel blade - hand forged and heat treated in the Woody Brand shop.  The Rockwell hardness comes out in the 59 - 60 range and man oh man, will it take hard core abuse and come back asking for more! 

This “BA” Cleaver reminds “Woody” of his infamous uncle Jack who was an old school “tough as nails” sort of guy.  Uncle Jack came back strong from an unfortunate railroad accident that took his right arm above the elbow.   Jack never missed a beat in life and in fact became an accomplished Black Smith in his own right.  “Woody” has elected to refer to this outstanding example of a “BA” Cleaver as the “Uncle Jack” rendition.

The proud new owner of the “Uncle Jack” will enjoy the rich character of the 1845 vintage Antique Curly Oak scales and the conversation inspiring hand hammered carbon steel blade.  “Woody” has commissioned famous leather smith Lonnie Hyatt to construct a finely tailored top grain leather head cover.  Lonnie’s work represents an exquisite presentation of the leather artist’s trade.  “Onliest one similar in the world and Uncle Jack would be proud.”
